Are you being mindful with your energy?

We are all familiar with mindfulness practices - it is set to be one of the wellness trends of 2017. However are you being mindful with your energy? This may sound a little melodramatic (me... drama queen??!!) but this week I was on the receiving end of what felt like malicious attacks. No, not from a physical or verbal point of view, but from an energetic point of view!

On several occasions I have had what I would describe as negative energy 'spat' at me in the most spikey and uncalled for way. All from people I do not know, and from people who have reacted in a split second. People swore at me from their cars, shot dagger eyes at me in shops and generally sent some pretty nasty vibes in my general direction.


A sensitive soul...


I am quite sensitive (OK, HIGHLY sensitive) to other people's energy. I can generally get a sense of how someone feels, often before they even know how they feel themselves. It is both a gift and a curse at times.

In my yoga teaching it is usually a gift because I can tailor my class to the energy levels I pick up on, however sometimes it isn't such a pleasant experience.

When someone thoughtlessly throws a dagger of negative energy at you, more often than not, they don't really understand the impact that can have on a highly sensitive person. The chances are they are reacting in the heat of the moment and won't even remember the occurrence an hour or so later.

But for the highly sensitive person. The chances are they will still be thinking about it now!


Careful who you shoot energy at...


I have learned to start putting in measures to protect my energy - but if you aren't expecting it - it can be a bit of a shock.

This week when I was driving to meet a friend for lunch and on driving along a narrow bit of road I had to reverse to let someone pass - even though she could have quite easily allowed room for me to squeeze through. I thought that the move was a little unkind to be honest and as she passed me she stuck her fingers up at me in the most aggressive and viscious way - it literally felt like someone had shot me.

I instantly wondered what I had done wrong. I instantly thought I must have done something so wrong in order to provoke a response like that. But as I questioned myself and re-played the event over and over again, I came to the conclusion that I hadn't in fact done anything remotely deserving of the poisonous energy I was on the receiving end of.

But yet I still find myself going over and over that little split second behaviour and wondering if in some way I attracted or 'asked for' what felt like uncalled for reactions.


Passing it on


A few minutes later I was phoned by someone (hands free don't worry!) in a call centre, trying to sell me some kind of IT solutions. I instantly told them I didn't have time to discuss it right now and hung up the phone in a swift and brisk manner. Then I realised that I had simply passed on that harsh energy that the 'mean girl in a blue car' had thrown at me a few minutes earlier.

It made me think about the energy we often throw around willy nilly and how this can in fact have a huge impact on other people. It made me really sit back and consider how I can be more kind and compassionate towards others, practising Ahimsa (non violence) as per Patanjali's 8 Limbs of Yoga - even when things are not necessarily an ideal situation.


It can be energetically dangerous out there...


January seems to conjure up a lot of negative vibes - there is so much short and sharp energy out there at the moment. Perhaps it comes from big world events that are going on, or the cold weather, the stresses and strains that a new year brings, or maybe as I open up to feeling a little more of my own emotions, I am becoming more and more sensitive to it.

So I felt compelled to write this blog for two reasons...

Firstly, to offer a little support to other people picking up on this spiky energy and noticing themselves being particularly sensitive. I would love to just make it clear to you that being 'sensitive' is not a negative thing. Feeling things and picking up on other people's energy is not a bad thing. But please do think about finding ways to protect yourself. And secondly I really want to urge you to take a moment to consider the energy you are giving out and how it could have an impact on the people around you. If you can just take a split second to consider your reaction to a situation and ask yourself what it would feel like to be on the receiving end of that, and then decide whether it is really an energy you want to be shooting out at the universe.
